This is the first newsletter of a year that started very well, with the recent first flight of the SpaceX Falcon Heavy

This issue features three main sections:

  1. Announcement of conferences from Aerospace Europe societies and the Pegasus network.
  2. Information concerning the Eucass EUROSAE partner, in the process of expanding its activities from France over to the rest of Europe.
  3. The usual tables of contents of European aerospace journals ordered by disciplines in order to facilitate access to material of interest to you. For this issue, the section "Patents of Interest" takes a hiatus.

  Eucass has observer status in the Initiative for Science in Europe (ISE). It relays its actions, particularly that which is aimed at collectively responding to EU about funding priorities. This may be of critical importance to your own research over the coming years.

To take action, you are invited to read the circular message just sent out by ISE, to follow their instructions and respond promptly. These two documents can be obtained from the dedicated Eucass webpage.

PEGASUS, organises its 14th Student conference, April 18-20 in Madrid.

As a member of the PEGASUS Network, the University of Bologna and specifically the Master's degree in Aerospace Engineering will organise an internal selection of papers for the participation in the 14th PEGASUS Student network, which will be held at UPM Madrid, Spain, on April 18-20 2018. 


The three selected students who submit the best papers will be rewarded with travel expenses refund in order to participate in the Student Conference.

EUROMECH is organizing its Colloquim 596 on Numerical Simulations of Flows with Particles, Bubbles and Droplets that will be held the 9-11 May in San Servolo - Venice, Italy.

The aim of the colloquium is to discuss the latest advancement in numerical simulations of flows with particles, bubbles and droplets, and the new possible interactions between experiments and simulations aiming to best exploit these advances: 

  • Transport phenomena in suspensions of particle, droplets and bubbles
  •  Turbulence modulation by dispersed phases
  •  Interfacial flows
  •  Phase-change in multiphase flows
  •  Synergy between modern experimental and numerical techniques
  •  Multiscale techniques in multiphase flows
  •  Advances in Numerical Method for dense multiphase flows

ERCOFTAC's Special Interest Group for Aeroacoustics is organizing its third course on Computational Aeroacoustics, that will be held the 4-5 June at ONERA's Châtillon facility near Paris.

This course is for researchers in industry and in academia. It will provide:

1) comprehensive overview of recent insights of aeroacoustics theories

2) practical problems involving the coupling between CFD’s results and CA

3) realistic applications in the transport, energy and process industry will be discussed

4) advanced computational aeroacoustics methods 5)  direct computation of aerodynamic noise

6)  specific topics reflecting participants interests will be discussed in a Q&A session

DLR is organizing 11th International Symposium on Special Topics in Chemical Propulsion & Energetic Materials (11-ISICP) that will be held the 9-13 September at Le Meridien Hotel at Stuttgart, Germany.

This International Symposium will serve as a platform for 

  • the communication between researchers, designers, manufacturers and decision makers regarding state-of-the-art approaches in the field of energetic materials, like propellants, explosives, and fuel or oxidizer ingredients
  • the discussion of new and improved safety techniques in the combustion of energetic materials
  • the discussion and recommendation of future directions for research in combustion, propulsion and chemical reaction systems​

Deadline for Abstract Submission is March 9, 2018.

ERCOFTAC is preparing an LES/DNS conference with support from EUCASS and EUROTURBO, the HiFiLeD symposium.

Supported by the EU H2020 TILDA project, it will take place in Brussels, 14 to 16 November 2018.


With the advent and growing availability of large scale computing power and facilities, a new area of turbulence research is opening with the ability to perform reliable high-fidelity large-eddy simulations (LES) and direct numerical simulations (DNS) for industrial relevant flow configurations. 

This availability is opening exciting new avenues towards understanding and modeling turbulence and transition by:

  1. Direct generation of HiFiLeD to fully predict complex flows, by capturing most or all of the relevant turbulent scales and interactions
  2. Analyzing in depth the underlying physics, supported in particular by new technologies of Machine Learning 
  3. Confronting available turbulence and transition models, identifying their deficiencies, improving the range of validity of current models and generate new ones.

This novel approach of High-Fidelity LES/DNS data has attracted many researchers in recent years, stimulated by other emerging areas, as Big Data, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML), providing new efficient methodologies for interrogating and investigating very large data sets.

These topics of turbulence research are the main focus of thisf new HiFiLeD Symposium.

EUCASS, second largest aerospace conference at the continental scale, and first of its kind in Europe since 2005, will come to Spain in 2019.

It will be hosted by ETSIAE at Universidad Politecnica de Madrid. It will cover all enabling sciences of interest to Aeronautics and Space, and plenary sessions will procure enlightening coverage of programmes and challenges presented by Industry and Agency managers.

It is to take place the first week of the month of July. You may want to bookmark your agenda now.
